Prosody

I learned this song from a student teacher who has spent a lot of time at summer camps. In researching the song, I found versions that do not have the mixed meter but that is not accurate to how it was sung at camp.

Activity

Stand students in a circle and sing the song together. On each repetition, add a new purple food/item to the soup. Repeat the two measures as you say all of the items that have been added to soup.

This is a fun echo song that I like to use to get my quiet classes talking. Go around the room having the kids pick different types or characteristics of the things that Charlie catches.

My kids love trying to combine ideas or to “trick me” by choosing things that are hard to fit in the song. Ill take it! Engagement counts and this builds the relationship that will keep them trying when things get harder.
