Activity:

Turn taking game: One student stomps around the room to the beat of the song. On the final quarter note (“you!”) the student points to another student to take their place.

For students who are hesitant to participate, or who have movement difference, they can hold the hand of the teacher or their favorite paraprofessional. Additionally, a seating chart and a finger/pointer can take the place of stomping around the room for students who cannot safely move around the room.

Assessment Opportunity:

Beat Keeping:

Watch for student ability to march to the beat of the song. Do they keep one foot in time while the other does not? Does beat keeping change at a different tempo?

Rests:

Is the student able to keep the beat through a silent rest? Do they rush/drag/alter their movement on the rest?

Predicting Song Ending/Tracking Form:

Does the student end preceisely on the word “you!” or do they run to choose a next participant on the ending rest of the song?

Note: While I have not seen evidence that convinces me that there are negative racial stereotypes associated with this song, some teachers have chosen to remove this song from their rotations. If you choose to remove this song from your classroom, Frog in the Meadow can serve a similar purpose.
