Prosody

I learned this song from a student teacher who has spent a lot of time at summer camps. In researching the song, I found versions that do not have the mixed meter but that is not accurate to how it was sung at camp.

Activity

Stand students in a circle and sing the song together. On each repetition, add a new purple food/item to the soup. Repeat the two measures as you say all of the items that have been added to soup.

The fun of the game is both in creating a weird soup and trying to remember every student’s purple food/item in order.

Prosody

Prosody is the natural alignment of syllables to rhythm. It is possible that student examples will not align with the rhythm notated in the song. That can be an opportunity for more mixed meter experience.
