Activity:

Give every child a scarf. Have them copy your movement as move it from one side of your body to the other to the steady beat. Try other motions such as passing between hands, holding the scarf in both hands at once, trying to keep the scarf balanced on an elbow, resting it on a toe, or flowing with the scarf on your head. An challenging extension is to place the scarf over your face and blow on the word “blow.”

On the rest at the end of lines 1 and 2, toss the scarf in the air and sing a high pitched “Wooooo.” This is a great way to activate the head voice in a non-stressful way.

Assessment Opportunity:

  1. Observe if students are able to cross the centerline of their body. If physically capable, are they able to flow or move to the beat.

  2. When holding the scarf with two hands, is the student moving both hands together?

  3. Is the “Woo!” vocalized in a chest or head voice?

  4. Are students able to appropriately pause on the rests? Are they able to add a timed breath on the rests?
